Build Your House on Solid Ground

Gardening is a respite my husband enjoys just before he goes off to paint houses and buildings for the hard work day. During his relaxing time out in the yard, he waters his fruit trees, checking the progress of the fruit. He is always sharing with me the progress of his growing vegetables, and I anticipate those ‘organic’ veggies on my table. My Benjamin simply enjoys the cool of the morning as the birds sing their morning songs. In the late afternoon when he comes home he unwinds with nature as he re-checks his garden, especially since the rabbits in the canyon are also checking his lettuce and carrots. He waters the grass and mostly enjoys God's gift of nature. This Past week my husband shared one of his backyard experiences, this time with a hummingbird.

As he was organizing his work equipment for the week he went to load one of his ladders. This one he hadn’t used in quite some time and so he was annoyed to see that there was a mess of twigs and grass on the steps. Heavy sigh, our grandkids are always building something and leaving trails. Then he stopped in his tracks when he realized that it was the fixings of a bird nest. Before he moved and transferred the ladder he carefully inspected the ground to make sure no bird eggs had fallen out, or even worse he checked for crushed eggs. While he was investigating, the builder flew up with a twig in his beak, fluttering, he looked around for his nest. When Ben noticed it, the bird was up close and personal, the bird seemed pretty indignant! Ben said it seemed as if the bird were recriminating him for messing with his home.

Together we chuckled at the audacity of the hummingbird. He was not intimidated by the human being, in fact he was bugged with Ben, as if Ben should remember that God was providing for the birds of the air. Ben knows about God's care for us, his creation. I commented that the housing crisis was affecting even the birds, little bird would have to find a more natural and safer place to build his home.  It was a sweet episode that reminded me of God's  care and provision. It is such a supernatural truth. On days that I am overwhelmed by life, I must remember that the God of the universe cares for me. Amazing!
